Squirrels have been stealing flags at a cemetery and using them for nests. Is this a political statement?

And to make matters worse they are red squirrels. Should we sit idly by and watch them defile and deface our nation's symbol, or should we string them. The commie loving varmints. This was on the internet news. Squirrels were taking the flags placed on graves up to their branches to make nests. Is nothing sacred. Have the squirrels gone nuts?Squirrels have been stealing flags at a cemetery and using them for nests. Is this a political statement?
yes, think about it for a moment. what has our government done for the squirrel?

they're flattened by our cars on our highways, electrocuted by our cables, wires, drown in our pools... shot at by our taxpayers..

so on.

That's funny I would love to see that, the squirrels have the right idea the flag means poo poo.
well that's a better use for them than flapping in the breeze above rotting flesh, at least something living is benefiting.
Ironically, greenies have afforded endangered status to the red squirrel, so your hands are tied on this one. Too bad they weren't the gray squirrels...then you could ';harvest'; them.
let theme keep it . because when they clean up the cemetery it going to be thrown away
what are americans and isrealians doing to people?? they are using them as trash!!!...im sorry but i mean that if you only know what happens out there and how they treat people in jail, what they do to women and children.....of course these people will despise america ...only for its politecs....it maybe their only way to say no ....they are so helpless...what about that american reporter that isreals killed in palestine by american made truck...they ran over her just because she is not on their side.....isnt she a national symbol??!!!
let's nuke em!
subsidized housing!?
Even the squirrels want to be en wrapped in the U.S.
yes even squirrels became nuts because of us they are our mirrors monkey see monkey do
We should arrest them all and force them to be informents, you get the net and I'll get to work on the tiny handcuffs.
I like squirrels. We should give them something else to use for their nests.
yep, they have been nuts for centuries, didnt you know that?

Thanks for the laugh!

That goes for most of the answers too! More laughs please!
I can't read your question properly........what do you mean ??

Your name looks like a vision test at the optician's anyway !:-)
u gotta wonder r they trying 2 make a statement and will always b nuts!

red squirrels?

send 'em back 2 the uk.

our native red squirrel's dying out, thanks 2 the grey/black imports.
Squirrels have always been full of nuts, at least the male variety....lol

They need a good dose of Varmit Busters to recover those flags, retrain the squirrels and send them packing to Mexico. Let them lose there and do their thing....lol...anywhere as long as it isn't Canada....:)
WHY DO SQUIRRELS HATE AMERICA?!?
What A Sign of The Times....
It's open season. Let's declare war on the squirrels.
Well, if you want to catch one of them, climb up a tree and act like a nut
It's part of the animal conspiracy! They're coming for us...lock your doors.
Squirrels are opportunists. They want warm nests - we put out all those handy pieces of cloth - they use them.
No, but I think you have!
no because they have know idea what it is.
Everyone wants part of the welfare system , even the squirrels.
yes it is a statement!

they want to show how patriotic they are and how much they love thier land by displaying the flag proudly in thier homes!

You have to be out of your mind to want red squirrels to breed. Red squirrels are the most destructive nieghborhood animal there is. I had one get into my attic once, it chewed wiring, ripped up insulation, chewed holes in the siding. But if that makes you happy, have at it.
I would think something similar to a birdhouse (only bigger) would work, try google-ing it and find something there, might even find some instructions.

What would you do if squirrels were nesting in your attic and on your roof?

Survival of the fittest. I would place my cat up there and turn my back.

We just can't save the world.

(OK I'm kidding. I don't usually have much to do at home so I would see if I could manually remove it, gently, and place it in a tree, after first researching where squirrels nests are usually made, since a cat could climb a tree.)

If you don't have time to do that, the Humane Society might have a solution. I'm not sure. Pest control would probably show little sympathy, since they are on a time clock and so forth. What would you do if squirrels were nesting in your attic and on your roof?
Haha yeah I'm Asian but I have compassion towards animals. My mom had my dad abandon a Schnauzer on the side of the road when I was a kid and remembering the dog just looking at us helplessly makes me cry endlessly. I will never be cruel to an animal.

Moth balls will run them off quick. Buy a box and just throw them out in the attic. You may smell the moth balls for a few days, but you need to get the squirrels out and find out where they came in and make sure it's fixed where they won't come back. Squirrels can cause a lot of damage. Chewing into electrical wires comes to mind when I think of squirrels in the attic. A definite fire hazard.
Catch them and carry them down to the park or the swamp and turn them loose.
moth balls....then plug the hole there coming in when there gone
What would I do? It is what I have done.

Squirrels cause major damage when ever they decide to take up residence in a home.

I made a decision, my home investment, or the squirrels.

Guess what, the squirrels lost. Pellet gun works the best if you are in town. If not, use a .22 caliber rimfire rifle.
i know you like them but a bb gun can rid the problem. i know you like them but sometimes the only way to rid your house of squirrels isnt what you want to do
Squirrels can and do cause EXTENSIVE damage if they get inside your house. I would get some poison, traps or a pellet gun and be rid of them ASAP!

We had just one young squirrel get inside the house and it tore up window and door frames all over the house trying to chew it's way out for just one work day. Until then, my wife thought they were ';cute';. Not so now!

Bert
Had that problem... the delightful lil rodents chewed through the phone cable to an entire apartment building.

First thing would be to put live-traps in your attic, then screen all possible entries to the attic, trim back your trees so they can't climb ONTO the roof. Trip the trees annually.
I would call a pest control company and explain my problem to them - if they could not get rid of the squirrels, I would ask them to refer me to a company that could get the job done.
i agree with you not likeing them die

but consider this , they will chew thru wires

and cause damage

so fill all the holes

and put wire over the wooden vents

do like the other guy said.call animal control.they can get it out for you, without killing it.
call animal patrol or whatever it is thats in your area. or take it to the self car wash, and spray water under your hood and under the car. or if you got a hose at home, try to flush it out.
go to the store and buy a fogger that you would get rid of cockroaches ina house set it under the middle of the car and you,ll get rid of everythingmaybe the motor and passengers too then come back air it out real good and washthe inside real good then i suggest a very strong air freshener
WHY IS IT THEY DO THIS?

This actually happens quite a lot, in all areas where the grey squirrel has populated. Most of the time, the reason is overpopulation - there are just so many squirrels out there that these places become attractive. Sometimes these are young and inexperienced squirrels or those that have been RAISED in a place such as this. We have found squirrels nesting in every conceivable place, from large industrial fans and equipment, to residential vents, fireplaces, grills and vehicles. Especially abandoned or little used vehicles, although there are squirrels that do this in vehicles that are used every day. Although I'm sure others might, I have not come up with this except with the grey squirrel.

OKAY, SO WHAT DO I DO?

For the present, you can open the hood up and leave it open so they will have no cover. (They don't like this.) Or, you can always try parking down the street, well out of the animal's comfortable territory. Even though this might put you out, somewhat, it might be easier than paying several hundred dollars for new wiring. Which, BTW, are charges that are generally not covered by your insurance....

    DETER THEM?

Well not really. Short of staking out a large dog within range of your car. Let me put it this way: there is no device, chemical, mechanical, magnetic, electronic, sonic, stroboscopic, or any combination of those, that will consistently keep these animals at bay. Neither will loud rock music, stuffed owls, marigolds, mint, basil, catnip, boric acid, bleach, ammonia, soap bars, Bounce dryer sheets, urine of wolves, coyotes, fox, bear, or dinosaur. Nor will dog-do or even human-do. Did I forget anything?

You have to do it the old-fashioned way. And that way is to trap and remove them, and that should be your ultimate goal. And I'll always say that this is also the reason not to encourage (by feeding) these, or any animal - ever. Any wild animal, habituated to man, becomes dependent on him.
I long trip will kill it, but if you don't want to do that Call animal patrol or just open the hood and shoot it with water, just stay away from the battery, spark plugs, unprotected wires, and air filter. Oh alternator too!
I know this sounds stupid, but it's the ONLY thing that got a family of voles out of my volvo-*ha, Volvo voles*. This guy got under my car with a cigar and let the smoke rise into the engine. the voles were out faster than snot, and it didn't cost me anything or waiting to have someone come out on thier own sweet time.
Take analamsta's advise. There is nothing a squirrel hates worse than the smell of moth balls. He will hi-tail it for greener pastures.

  • Tell me about gray grey squirrels about their litters/babies and nest?

Tell me all you know on the gray squirrel I am in the midwest. It's a gray color not red. We have a nest on our backyard tree, they always come back to it each year, that or it's different squirrels I don't know much about them. Please don't tell me they're annucense, we only have these 2 in our backyard.

They built their new nest about a week ago.

    There are 2 squirrels.

Can you tell me about when they have their babies, how long the babies stay in the nest and more information.

I saw the babies last year when they were pretty small.

Thanks allTell me about gray grey squirrels about their litters/babies and nest?
Gray Squirrels, Red Fox Squirrels %26amp; Black Squirrels are all the same! Just different color phases! They will %26amp; do interbreed. The small red squirrels in the midwest are different species than their larger cousins.

The nest is just a woven mass of leaves %26amp; twigs and is only used 1 season.

If you are in the Midwest the squirrels are probably breeding now- early April. The pups are born about 5 weeks after breeding.

More than 1 litter a year is common.

Mom raises the kids with no help from Dad.

Pups should be out of the nest within 30 to 40 days. Watch %26amp; you'll see Mom teaching them what to forage for.

If you want to feed these squirrels- peanuts, cob corn, popcorn, sunflower seeds are good choices. If your area doesn't have water available for them close by a pan of water (birdbath) is good.

Squirrels do not hibernate, but only go into a semi-hibernation state. Even in the middle of winter they are out on nice days.

They will store food for winter use! Acorns are a favorite. Pinecones also- they shred cones to get at the pine nuts inside.

Their major predators are cats, hawks, %26amp; owls.Tell me about gray grey squirrels about their litters/babies and nest?

Help! I found 3 baby squirrels that fell from their nest and it's midnight!?

What do I do with them? I heard squeaking and went outside to see 3 baby squirrels on the ground that had fallen from their nest. There was a cat over them, trying to eat them, so I put them in a box and tied the box on a high branch of the tree they fell from (luckily the cat is inside now). How do I care for them until tomorrow when I will take them to the wildlife rehabilitation center? They have all their fur but their eyes aren't open yet.Help! I found 3 baby squirrels that fell from their nest and it's midnight!?
There mother may find them an carry them off it they are still out side. If their eyes are closed then they are not eating solid food yet. If that is the case they are very young. Keep them on the branch an hopefully their mother will find them an take them. she will pick them up in her mouth such as a cat dose with its kittens. If they aren't taken soon call your local shelter an tell them. They may come out an get them for you.Help! I found 3 baby squirrels that fell from their nest and it's midnight!?
Honestly they would be better off if you try again to find them a safe spot in the tree with the cat inside not watching what you are doing You can use a med to small card board box and double the bottom add some leaves cut a few holes around the top of the box and ron rope through to tie it in the tree when the parents hear the babies cry and know its safe they will care for them Sometimes when you take them to a rehabilitation center they end up food for there birds of prey they are waiting to release back Iam sorry to say this but I have seen it I know its hard but its nature it sucks sometimes

If you want to take on hand feeding just research hand feeding baby squirrels you can make formula your self but thats a big step and not legal to keep them they also carry disease and can be infested with tics and lice I have known some one who raised one and it came to visit him all the time after releasing it
dont leave the box outside, bring it inside away from the cat and give them a towel or blanket, cover the box so they dont get out but so they can breath but there isnt anything you can do till u take them to that wildlife place.. check them tho, if that cat got one of them then you should take them to a vet or somewhere. they could even die over night if they are hurt, so check them like now!!
if you have like goat milk or kitten, or puppy milk you could give it to them from a dropper, but they really are proble soo dehydrated they need Subq IV fluids. Do not touch them much use a towel, or you could but them in the nest to see if mom comes back, but they have a sent on them now. Make sure you keep them warm.
Well sounds fun... really, if they have peach fuzz looking fur (light grey)thier probably to young to make it... If thier fur is normal squirrel lookin but thier eyes aint open yet they may make it...

My sister kind of had the same thing happen last year... and only 1 of the 2 survived... and she raised ginger and when she was a teenager aged squirrel she was returned to the wild....

yeah we're from the southern part of America...

    get'er done....
you should put alot of padding, like towels underneath inside the box so the squirrels wont be cold or frightened and try giving them some nuts of some sort.

and best thing to do is look on google or some internet site they should be able to help.
Take to that shelter. Until then, keep the cat locked up, and supply some food. They might be too young to eat solid food, so get some milk and give it to them.

What do birds/squirrels do when their nest/ tree is cut down?

A family of magpies lived in a tree outside of my home. It was cut down today as the roots warped all of the pavements. The family of birds cant seem to understand that home is no longer there and are hanging aboiut on my wall. What will happen for them now as it is late at night? How long will it take for them to restart a new nest? I am just concerned as I love those birds. What do birds/squirrels do when their nest/ tree is cut down?
Birds only use a nest when they are having young. After that they don't use the nest any more, although some birds will reuse it for another clutch of eggs. Birds live mostly in tree branches and bushes. The tree that was cut down may have been one of the trees they were just used to being there. They will find another tree, don't worry, all will be well. Squirrels do live in their nests, and if it is destroyed, they will make another one elsewhere. They adapt very easily. Please read my profile. What do birds/squirrels do when their nest/ tree is cut down?
Generally, birds do not live in nests..they reproduce in them. Sure they may use the tree itself to sleep and roost in, but they should not be breeding so late in the year. If you live in the US, it is actually illegal to destroy a birds nest as they are protected by law. Other countries have similar laws, that is why it is suggest to only do trimming and cutting of trees during the fall and winter seasons as not to accidentally or purposely destroy nests. There are a FEW species that will build nests specifically to roost in, and magpies can be one of them, so if they were sitting on nests in the tree..they were empty nests, not containing eggs or chicks in which case you did not break the law, and in which case the birds will just move elsewhere and no real harm was done.

Please, please help? I am desparate. I hear mice or squirrels building a nest underneath my kitchen sink.?

Yet I live in a home with no cellar underneath - only a teeny, tiny crawlspace. Although animals are unable to enter my home - (I covered ALL cracks and holes) - their persistent nesting noises are disconcerting. Not to mention the fact that I don't want them building a nest around my pipes and heating vents! Is there any product - safe around house pets - that will deter these noisy pests? A friend told me she purchases something you plug in the wall, and it seems to be working for her. She never sees mice around/in her home. Please help? What do you recommend as the safest, best natural or electronic product?

Thank you. Please, please help? I am desparate. I hear mice or squirrels building a nest underneath my kitchen sink.?
Electronic devices such as strobe and ultrasound emitters do not work. Government tests have proved this. You may see short-term results, but long-term, it is not a solution.

Call an exterminator and ask for a free estimate. They will come over and take a look. Once you know what you are dealing with, you can either hire the person or do the pest control yourself. Please, please help? I am desparate. I hear mice or squirrels building a nest underneath my kitchen sink.?
Only some of the gadgets you plug in a wall will irritate some of the mice and rodents. I bought Smarter Image's Mouse Mover and it worked, kind of. The mice ran out of the living room into the bedroom. So for my house I guess I need at least two.

(PS there's many bad reviews for the mouse mover and it's no longer made.)

I read more ratings and you need a device for each room/area. So one for each bedroom and bath, ,but only one for the living/dining/kitchen. And it will take 2-3 weeks to drive them away.

I looked at Amazon.com. There are reviews for the various ultrasonic repellers gadgets, so you may make a more informed choice.

I've also read a cotton ball dipped in Oil of Peppermint is repugnant to mice and rodents. They'll stay away simply cause it smells so awful. The 1 oz bottle costs about $5 at the local health food store.

Don't buy Peppermint extract, then you'll only have drunk mice.
Mice hate the smell of peppermint. If you could get that in there, they might leave. It should run other things off too.

That is going to smell bad when you turn your heating vents on.

Not a pet? Squirrels and birds nesting questions?

I love the birds and squirrels in my yard, the squirrels are so much fun to watch and are quite friendly too.

I want to do nice things for them for entertaining me since I can't have pets - has anyone provided bedding material for birds and squirrels before? I have a huge bag of dryer lint I was saving for this purpose, but can't really bring myself to set it out there for them. What about yarn? Do you think birds would take yarn/string if I set it out for them? Am I starting too early, should I wait until later in the spring?

Has anyone done this before? Not a pet? Squirrels and birds nesting questions?
I often provide nesting material for my outdoor feathered friends.

    Cornell Lab of Ornithology suggests:

Ideally you should provide nest material naturally by leaving or creating wild, natural areas on your property (perhaps hidden from your neighbor's view) where plants can grow into thickets, and leaves and twigs can fall and not be raked up immediately. This untidy debris gives a variety of material for the birds to pick through when they are building nests. They may even pick through your compost pile looking for suitable nest material.

Alternatively, you can put out concentrated stashes of nest material. It can be natural materials like straw, small sticks, and twigs, or manmade materials such as yarn and string. Try putting out any combination of the following:

    Dead twigs

    Dead leaves

    Dry grass

Yarn or string鈥攃ut into 4- to 8-inch pieces

Human or animal hair (especially horse hair)

Fur (e.g. dog or cat fur)

    Sheep's wool

    Feathers

Plant fluff or down (e.g. cattail fluff, cottonwood down)

Kapok, cotton batting, or other stuffing material

    Moss

    Bark strips

    Pine needles

Thin strips of cloth, about 1 inch wide by 6 inches long

    Shredded paper

Among the strange materials birds occasionally use in their nests are snake skins, plastic strips, cellophane, and aluminum foil. Many small birds use spider webs to glue nest material together. Swallows, phoebes, and American Robins use mud to construct their nests. You might consider creating or keeping a muddy puddle in your garden for them.

What about dryer lint? Some people include this as suitable bird nesting material. Others recommend against it because it is porous and dries out poorly if it's rained on in the nest. Still others warn that wet dryer lint dries into a hard mass, providing poor nest insulation, however this may happen only if it contains laundry detergent or fabric softener residue. More information is needed before we can recommend offering dryer lint.

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBir鈥?/a>Not a pet? Squirrels and birds nesting questions?
I did it for my caged birds and for wild ones as well. I also put up nesting boxes for squirrels (I rehab).

The one thing I would correct from above poster, nix the long string and horse hair. If it becomes wrapped around the leg of baby birds or baby squirrels, it will cause loss of legs or toes due to circulation being cut off.

My wild wrens help themselves to whatever they fancy; dryer lint, feathers from pillows, the coco fiber from around hanging planters, the long fronds from my rainbow fern. . .

I bring hair shed from grooming the horses but no mane or tail hair. For squirrels, wool yarn in short pieces, old wool blankets cut in small squares, you'd be surprised how effectively they can shred and fluff.

Why does a squirrel keep trespassing onto a blue jays nest?

I live outside of Fort Worth Texas, somewhat in the country. My question is why does a squirrel keep bothering a blue jays nest. I have a blue jays nest right outside my window and the two blue jays were going nuts off and on for about an hour, so I look outside and I see a bastard squirrel sitting in the blue jays nest eating! What the hell is he eating and why is he doing it? He's not eating the blue jays eggs or baby birds is he? Can I shoot the arrogant asshole with my shotgun? I've been throwing rocks at him but he keeps coming back! Why does a squirrel keep trespassing onto a blue jays nest?
He's probably eating the eggs. Why does a squirrel keep trespassing onto a blue jays nest?
No you can not shoot it. Nature is nature. And Blue Jays can fend for themselves trust me. They are actually known for stealing eggs from other birds. The squirrel may be eating the eggs but he may be eating a nut and just sitting on the nest. Maybe instead of thinking of ways to hurt the animal maybe feed it. Throw some nuts out or some corn and that way if he is hungry he will go for that instead of the other. Illegal to shoot it with a gun and punishable by law and will be fined.
Squirrels eat eggs and birds...surprise, surprise:)

The squirrel is not trespassing. Wild animals follow the laws of nature, not man. Animals have to eat, and while you may find their diet to be distasteful, you're going to have to get used to the fact that sometimes they eat each other.

You'd be an idiot to think that you can control nature by shooting the squirrel. The squirrel is no worse than the Blue Jay. Blue Jays eat other bird's eggs and their babies, too. In fact, while Mr. Squirrel was snacking on baby Blue Jays, Mr. and Mrs. Blue Jay were probably out nibbling on hummingbird eggs:)

Observe nature and learn something, but do not interfere..
He is eating the eggs or babys I would shoot him
    He is getting the eggs.
    Don't mess with mother nature.

    Do squirrels make nests?

yes they doDo squirrels make nests?
Yes, they do. Have lots of squirrels around here and you can see their nests very clearly during late fall and winter (after the trees have dropped their leaves. If is more fun to watch them build them - stuffing their mouth with fallen leaves, running up the tree to place them in / around the nest, then back to the ground for another batch :-)

The urine of predators is sold in nurseries and hardware stores, this may scare the squirrel away.

They don't like the smell of mothballs either.

You could get a trap (you might be able to borrow one from Animal Control or the Humane Society, or buy one); if you catch the squirrel alive, you will have to release it at least 3 miles away to keep it from coming back. You may have to do this because this particular squirrel has already discovered a nice nesting spot in your car.

Find out where the squirrel is building the nest, and cover the entrance with metal screen or something so the squirrel can't get in.

Clean out the nest area and rinse with diluted vinegar to neutralize the urine smell. (You can rinse with something else afterward if you think vinegar is bad for the car engine. Or clean it however you think best.) The urine smell may attract another squirrel to your car, even if you can't smell it yourself.

The quicker you deal with this, the better for your car.HELP! a squirrel is trying to nest in my car and my dogs are trying to tear my car apart to get at it.?
    lmao.

use something to poke it out i guess.
Buy powdered fox urine......just do a yahoo! search for it.....WORKS EVERY TIME!!!! might smell for a while but the squirrel will be gone

If you found some baby squirrels on the ground that fell out of their nest what would you do?

would you keep them and nurse them back to health?,and how would you take care of them?If you found some baby squirrels on the ground that fell out of their nest what would you do?
Baby squirrels fall out of the nest for various reasons. The first thing to do is to put the baby in a box up off the ground to keep domestic animals from being able to get it, and leave it for 2 to 3 hours. If it is cold weather, heat up a water bottle or bag of rice and place it in the box with baby. This will assist in keeping him/her from getting Pneumonia. More times than not, the mother will retrieve her baby. If the mother does not retrieve her baby after 3 hours, please call ARC HotlineIf you found some baby squirrels on the ground that fell out of their nest what would you do?
How high up is the nest?

The critters may have internal injuries.

You may want to contact a wild life rescue agency for assistance.

I don't think you should really mess with them because you don't know if they have a disease or anything. I would call the Animal Protective League. (:
kill them, they're obviously aliens disguised as squirrels, squirrels don't have nests.
well if you saw the mom still at the nest put them back. if she doesn't come back then google it.
    call animal rescue
I'd put them back in the nest and let the innatentive mother handle it.

3 baby squirrels fell out of their nest in my backyard, what do I do?

Since I got home from the store, I heard little squealing coming from a tree past a small fence in my backyard, which was at 2 today. A couple hours later, I wanted to know what it was. I stood by my fence, and saw a nest. I then saw something small-the size of a rat- fall out of it. I'm an animal lover, so I freaked out. I grabbed a plastic bag and used it as a glove, and climbed over my fence, picked up the what I now knew was a baby squirrel, so young that its eyes were shut and it had no teeth. my dad put it in a bucket with a coat under neath it, and then I heard more squealing. I went back and found another baby! So I picked it up, and put it in the bucket with the 1st baby. An animal nurse told us to put them in a shoe box with a towel, and put it as close to the tree as possible. We did that, and I've been checking on them. Then, we heard more squealing, so I went back into the forest to check out what it was and found yet another baby! I put it into the shoe box with the others. It is now 8:30, and the mother hasn't return. We think the mother might have been killed by a coyote, cat, dog, etc. I decided if the mom still isn't there by late tonight, we're taking the babies and we're gonna try and feed them milk through a droplet thing, but the thing is what type of milk? Any other suggestions for food? And in the morning, we're gonna take them to a place where people will take care of them.

I just need to know what to do.3 baby squirrels fell out of their nest in my backyard, what do I do?
The same thing happened to me. We kept the squirrel for the night and early in the morning we sat it out and the mother came up and snatched him! The night we had him we gave him fruit flavored Gatorade.

    Good luck! Hope this helps.

i think u should take it 2 the vet so they can put a tag on it and they can give it a home.
If you know where the nest is, put them back. The whole ';the mom will smell you on them'; thing is a complete myth. You won't necessarily see mom come back, so don't assume that just because you don't, she hasn't been there.

If you really and truly believe that she isn't coming back, then you need to call your local Animal Control or exotic vet and get the number for a wildlife rescue. You aren't knowledgeable in caring for orphaned wildlife, and they'd be much better off with someone more experienced. I know a lot of people want to take care of cute, tiny, adorable baby squirrels, but the truth is they're wild and will not come to see you as their mommy. Squirrels are feral, and the moment they open their eyes they'll start acting it. I've seen squirrels raised from infancy, and they never become tame. Also, depending on where you live, it's illegal to try and keep wild animals captive.

    Call a wildlife rehab center.

Did your boss discipline you when he/she found that nest of squirrels in the bottom drawer of your desk?

i mean c'mon... they need to hibernate somewhere until spring arrives...Did your boss discipline you when he/she found that nest of squirrels in the bottom drawer of your desk?
I surely did have to think on my feet the day MY secreted squirrels were rumbled, BR!

I guess it was my own fault though. Like 'I Love Seb', I was also hoarding some porn in my drawer - along with a litter of seven adolescent squirrel cubs. Not surprisingly the cubs got bored on their own over the weekend, and when I arrived back at work the following Monday they had strewn the entire office with lewd photographs of nudes - with bushy tails and whiskers drawn on in biro!

Luckily I managed to convince my boss that the squirrels were a team of migrant workers I'd hired temporarily to clean my desk. For the rest of that week the cheeky youngsters had to wear small white overalls and speak only Portuguese whilst they tidied all the desks in the office.

I think we all learned a valuable lesson!Did your boss discipline you when he/she found that nest of squirrels in the bottom drawer of your desk?
Yes, but it wasn't so much the squirrels themselves, but more the fact that their nesting material of choice was taken from the tampon machine and supplemented with the chewings of a Picasso signed lithograph.

When the kits, pups, calves, spawn, hatchlings, whelp, or whatever squirrels give birth to, were born all was forgiven.
welll...... no, i didn't have squirrels in there..... i had porn...... got fired...

  • Are nesting squirrels a problem?

I have a large tree at the front of my house which comes very close to my roof and for the last few days there have been squirrels making a HUGE nest in it (on one of the branches that it quite close to the house). Should I call someone to try to relocate them, like the Humane Society or can I just leave them? I dont want to hurt them but I've heard that squirrels can be a real pain if they get in to your attic/loft. What are the chances of them trying to do this (if it starts to rain or soemthing for example)?

    Any suggestions?

    ThanksAre nesting squirrels a problem?
leave them. If something goes wrong the squirrels will just try again elsewhere. Are nesting squirrels a problem?
this is fine as long as you do not pester them a lot or else they will leave.

What is the best way to rid of squirrels nesting in the attic; how also to prevent new ones in the future?

Squirrels have easily adapted to humans. They frequently use buildings as nesting areas. Squirrels love to stay in an attic or soffit. They often find a small opening and will chew a wider hole to gain access to the building. They bring nesting material into the home, and make quite a bit of noise scurrying around and caching nuts. They often fall down the chimney flu and make a lot of noise or enter the fireplace. Sometimes they fall down a wall from the attic and get stuck. They often chew their way into commercial buildings or apartments. They often enter the attic through the gable vent. Squirrels can cause a fire hazard in homes by bringing in nesting material, and by chewing on power lines. Squirrels can leave behind a lot of droppings and urine in the attic. The droppings not only smell bad, but they pose a biohazardous risk, and the smell attracts new squirrels. I highly recommend attic decontamination services if you've had squirrels living in your attic.

Wondering how to get rid of squirrels? There is no magic spray or device that you can use to make them go away. Some people try to sell predator urine, such as coyote or fox urine to get rid of squirrels, but that doesn't work. They also try to sell ultrasonic sound emitters. These devices are worthless at eliminating squirrels. Some old wive's tales recommend the use of mothballs or ammonia-soaked rags to make them leave, but I've been to countless homes where these techniques failed - biologists know that these attempts won't work. The ONE AND ONLY WAY to take care of your problem is with trapping and removal of the animals. If you need to find a professional trapper in your hometown, just click our comprehensive list of hundreds of wildlife removal professionals, and you can have your problem quickly taken care of!-What is the best way to rid of squirrels nesting in the attic; how also to prevent new ones in the future?
First you have to find out where they are getting in at. You have to make sure they are all out before you can seal their entry off. You can set a humane trap and try to catch them. What we did was we found out how they were getting in and where. My husband took large plastic detergent containers and made like a little slide, they could slide out but not get back in, when they were all out we then sealed the area off. No problems since. If you try this make sure you keep checking to make sure they don't try to chew their way through the plastic, we caught them chewing at it, which would have allowed them to get back in. Best of Luck. What is the best way to rid of squirrels nesting in the attic; how also to prevent new ones in the future?
You will definately want to use a trap to catch the squirrel alive, you don't want a dead squirrel up there. Your local humane society can usually loan you a live trap. Then you will need to do a thorough walk around of your house to find out how he got in. Sometimes it is as easy a repairing a loose vent screen.
Get a cat. The presence of a predator will discourage squirrels.
the humane way is to use the metal traps made which will catch the squirrel without harming it and to prevent them coming in you have to find the entry hole and repair or fill it if you have wood siding or shingles it could happen again but hopefully not

also be sure to release the trapped squirrel far away from your neighborhood

I believe you can also buy some kind of squirrel repellent
    Get a Silky Terrier!

They are GREAT pets, very entertaining, and no varmint would dare step paw anywhere near your home or yard...

WARNING: If a Silky sees one through the fence, it's likely to get over a 6 ft fence to go after it.... no chain link or wood... must be solid 6 ft vinyl. There are no cross links or chains it can climb and it can't see through it.

    Good luck!
put a ';no squatting'; sign on your attic.....

seriously... look for their means of entry... then close it....

thats way you can prevent them from coming inside...
u must set traps every night /day , many might get caught , this would stop them , but it might take a continous three months.
you can put some rat posion and get rid of them that way and then cheek for holes and fix them.

Cutting down trees with squirrels nesting?

    I live in UK.

I have a 40ft row of conifers in my garden which have been a squirrel home for several years. Unfortunately I must have these trees cut down. I am really worried about having to evict the squirrels. When do they have their young, would it be around now? What will happen to them all? Will they have to fight with other squirrels locally to find somewhere new to nest? OK, I know they're only squirrels, but they've never done me any harm and I do worry about the little guys. Please advise!Cutting down trees with squirrels nesting?
The Grey Squirrel is not protected,so you can cut down your trees as any young will be taken by the parents to another safe place.

But please check that no late breeding birds have a nest in them,or else you could be in trouble.Cutting down trees with squirrels nesting?
Squirrels give birth twice a year, in January-April and

in August-September. There are 2-4 babies per litter. The

babies are self-sustaining at about 12-14 weeks of age and will leave

the nest area in search of their own territory

If you want them to remain in or around your garden, put up some nesting boxes elsewhere before you cut down the trees also put out food for them, if food is plentiful and nesting is easy they will stay around.

Also see:www.squirrels.org this may answer some other questions or give information you need
If they are grey, you are allowed to shoot them.people are also starting to eat them these days.we need to save the red,get rid of the aggressive grey.bon appetite
I have seen a couple of young squirrels running around my garden, presume they have finished by now. You are so kind to worry about them, i also like squirrels.
I think they will be able to find another home. They can still mate now, just make sure you don't cut down the trees while they are in it.
Grey squirrels are vermin only worry about red squirrels
as long as they are grey squirrels then there is no problem. Any young will be long gone by now anyway.
i hope they find a new home but you could ask a wildlife rescue for the answer to your question they would no

    Do Squirrels reuse their nest?

And does anyone know how to tell if their are baby squirrels in a nest. We are about to do some severe tree cutting and i don't want to cut a tree that has babies in it.Do Squirrels reuse their nest?
.Yes, squirrels do re-use nests. The only effective way is to look into the nest. If you have the time, observe (with binoculars) if there is 'traffic' to and from the nest.

You don't say where you are, if you're in Fl., there are already babies in nests here. If you're up north, taking down trees/limbs will evict the occupant into cold weather and it likely will not survive.

Before you cut anything, locate a good rehabber and keep that # handy, in fact, a heads up call would be greatly appreciated. Call around to a few vet's offices and ask about rehabbers in your area. If there are young in the nest, time is critical.

Young squirrels and birds cannot thermal regulate and must be kept warm.Do Squirrels reuse their nest?
A rule of thumb is “nests with fewer leaves tend to be birds, more leaves squirrels.” Large leaf-lined nests high up in trees are those of gray and red squirrels. Other large nests could have been made by red-tailed hawks or crows. squirrels also nest in tree cavities.

Many birds reuse nests, so admire the nests you see — do not remove or collect them. (In fact, one must have a federal permit to collect nests.) Still other birds may build two or three nests a year. To encourage nesting, try leaving some dead trees standing, hang out a bird house, and keep your barn doors open.
Yes they do reuse their nests. Just check the nest before you cut the branch to see if a squirrel has started a new family yet.
i dont think so (i know that birds dont)..........but dont count on it. i dont know how to tell if baby suirrels are in a nest.
I dont know if all squirrels do this, but in one of our big trees we have a huge nest and every year for the past 12yrs. there are a family of squirrels in it.

What is a squirrels nest called?

The nest that you see up in the tree is called a ';drey.'; They are typically made out of small twigs, leaves and other leaf-like materials. • Why does a squirrel keep trespassing onto a blue jays nest?

Squirrels will eat the eggs and chicks of various bird species. The one you saw is almost certainly after those of the bluejays. Kindly do not shoot him, he is just trying to survive. Removing predators like this can upset the balance of nature by artificially allowing more young birds to survive than they naturally should. Why does a squirrel keep trespassing onto a blue jays nest?
Yes he is eating the Blue Jay's eggs. Dag nab it! Squirrels love to eat bird eggs.

This is very common behavior. In fact John James Audubon, Illustrated the Blue Jay with a squirrel harassing their nest to rob eggs in his Birds of America.

Shooting the squirrel is a possible solution but you may find another squirrel takes the place of the dead one. You should make sure you are in compliance with all game and firearms laws and regulations for your area, before you do this.
i am guessing that the blue jay don't have any NO TRESPASSING signs up around his nest if not that is why .

what you have to do is put up no trespassing signs all around the blue jays nest .

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

i am sorry i have a bad sense of humor it could be eating the blue jays babies i would shoot the darn thing .

I raised a squirrel that fell out of her nest. i want to release her but i think she is too tame!?

I found her when she was four weeks old, and now she is about 16 weeks old! I have been waiting to realease her, but i have been holding back because she hurt her back leg. Now it is almost healed but i think she is way to tame to be let go. She runs around the house and is not afraid of humans or dogs and does not bite. My dad tells me to let her go from her outside cage and let mother nature take it's course...but i worked too hard to raise her and i'm not going to let her die. Please dont just say ';If she can climb and eat food then let her go'; because it is not that easy!

give her away to a nature center they will give her the proper attention.I raised a squirrel that fell out of her nest. i want to release her but i think she is too tame!?
I know it is really hard to let an animal go! what you should do is let it go in your back yard but then check on it everyday and if the squirrel isn't doing well then take it back and help it more!!!

    Thanks -Shayla
since it is tame, you may have a permanent pet. if you release it and it is not afraid of natural preditors, it may not last long. I know someone who found two baby squirrels and took care of them, but kept them in a cage outdoors and then started keeping the cage door open. they would come and go and then eventually didn't come back. I don't know what happened to them, but there was a squirrel hit by a car near the house which may have been one of them, or not.
I have a pet squirrel, too. I have had her for almost three years, now. I think it would be better to wait for at least another month before you release her, and believe it or not, they don't actually reach sexual maturity until about a year and a half old.

In Florida, where I am, it is legal to keep a squirrel as a pet. However, it would not be legal for me to release her onto the public being that I am not a licensed wildlife rehabber.

I have a link to an excellent guide on squirrel care, rehabilitation and release. It is an extremely well put together PDF manual.

There is a great section on how to properly release a squirrel in that PDF.

I have written much more than that about her. She is an extremely affectionate animal to me and my son. Though, she hates my husband. It is no fault of his own, and it was not always that way. She decided around 6 months of age not to like him anymore. It is normal for captive squirrels to pick one, or in my case two, people to be attached to.
it might e hard to let her go but i have an idea

ok so call a zoo ro sumthin becuz now that she is tame she might not be able to live in nature and adapt to it . there was a case in a nature center where they raised a squirrel a very similar situation to urs and they said that the squirrel was too tame and it couldnt live in the wild so they kept it and gave it to a zoo where they took very good care of it and it was soo tame every1 loved it and the old owners could visit it

that was was the best solution i could think of so i suggest calling ur local nature center or zoo!!! u can visit it!

its a great thing ur doing healing it

    hope i helped!
You can let her go in and out of her soft release or outside cage. Hide food for her and let her find it in her cage. Always leave her cage outside open in case she wants to go. When I was younger I had the same thing happen and I raised a squirrel and he was my pet until he died at 15. They can make good pets but they need the proper nutrition and you have to make sure you get them plenty to chew on as their incisor teeth can get to long and they can grow into their upper jaw. Give them antlers, big blocks of wood, all kinds of things. Also have to make sure their diet is proper. While it is illegal to keep just dont tell many people. I am a rehabber now but I remember nursing and loving that squirrel (Gimp) and not wanting to let him go if I thought he would die. Another option is to call a local rehabber in your area being that he is young she can put him in with others of his kind and gently wean him from human imprinting. Do not let him go until you are certain he can fend for himself. the rehabber will know when to let him go. And sometimes if they cannot be released they use them to teach or keep them there. Follow your heart and do what you think is best. A lot of people may not agree with me but Im only saying this because I have been there.
its not a zoo animal so the zoo is the wrong way to go but contact the rspca ir ask yhur local vets about what to do with the squirell maybe start bye put outside in what ever yhuu keep it in and try slowy release btu do ask a vets for help about it :D
Try the nature center or zoo idea, otherwise. Dads house dads rules and dads right.
why not keep her? id like to have a pet squirrel. Thats soo cool.
Give her a kiss and a small hug and let her go. Her instincts will kick in later:)

What do squirrels nest look like?

From the ground they usually look like a big ball or cluster of dead leaves high up in the branches of a tree.

3 baby squirrels barely 3 days old fell ot of their nest, how can I raise them or what should Ido?

I mean I want them to live, but I work 40 +hours a week, plus have a 2, 10 %26amp; 17 yr old.3 baby squirrels barely 3 days old fell ot of their nest, how can I raise them or what should Ido?
Raising baby squirrels is tough..... I have done it before for a wildlife center.

The very best thing to do is to put them back in the nest using gloves (sometimes when a mother smells the scent of humans on their babies they will abandon them). Their mother knows how best to take care of them.

If that is not possible then the next best thing to do is to have a wildlife center look after them or if you live in Canada, The Ministry of Natural Resources is the best people to call.

If that isn't possible and you need to look after them yourself for whatever reason then there are a few things that you need to be aware of.

The first is that they need to be fed every couple hours. You will not be able to go to work all day without being able to come home to feed them at lunch time and you will need to feed them in the middle of the night or at least very late at night (1 - 2 am) for the first couple weeks.

The second is that they will need to be fed with a syringe for a few weeks and there is a special way to do this. They need to be fed in an upright position and needs to be done very slowly and carefully because if you aren't careful then they will accidentally inhale the liquids and it gets in their lungs and they develope pneumonia like symptoms and will die. Never feed them cow's milk. Feed either powdered or liquid ESBILAC (puppy milk replacer).

Gently stroke genital area with a tissue to stimulate urination and defecation at each feeding. Stroking is not usually necessary after eyes are opened.

The less contact they have with humans the better chance they have to be set free and survive when they get older. So don't play with them or treat them like pets. Feed them and then put them back in their cage.

You need to build them both a large wire cage and a wooden house. The wire cage should be about 5 feet high by 4 feet long by 3 feet deep. It will need to be kept away from the prying eyes of pets , small kids, etc. or they will stress out and die. The best design for a wooden house should have two rooms with an opening between each, a back door opening and a front door opening (front door would be in the floor of the first room) and a removable lid. It is built this way so that it can later be placed in a tree and so that predators can't get at them and they can escape out the back door if they need to.

Once they start to eat solid foods it is very important to only feed them peanuts and other nuts as a treat not as a meal. Too many of these is actually not healthy for them (too much fat in them).

There is so much more to know so please check out the following link where they have even more info that I don't have room for here:

    http://www.stfranciswildlife.org/squirrels.html

    Good luck!

3 baby squirrels barely 3 days old fell ot of their nest, how can I raise them or what should Ido?
It'll be hard, I can tell you that. They're not related to sugar gliders, but I'm guessing the youngs about the same size, so you'd have to keep them warm in some sort of blanket or something. And you'd have to call somebody or google some forumns to get some more expirieced people. You'd have to feed them regularly too (altough what you feed them I don't really know altough it's probably some milk you'd get from the vet which is what you do for rabbits...but honestly sorry but I'm not too up to date on squirrels, so your 17 year old would probably have to help out (good luck with that ;)

    keep us informed ^-^
Call fish and game or animal control. If you have a humane society call them. Call a vet and ask where to call for help.

They need fluids like pedialyte for tonight thru a eye dropper. If you don't have that then Gatoraid will work too.
Look up for your area, the wildlife rescue, or if you can't find that, call your local humane society and they will have a # for you to call for wildlife rehabiltation.

You can get repellents to deter squirrels or buy collars to go around your trees..but the little critters can jump pretty high.,..so the collars will need to be placed strategically to not allow them to do this. Other than that...just let the little critters do what they do in nature..the birds will / and always have found a way to co-habitate (so to speak) with other animals in our world.I want birds to build nests in the trees in my yard, but how can I keep squirrels out %26amp; not harm birds(robins)

They can even be hung in trees to deter the little vermits :)!I want birds to build nests in the trees in my yard, but how can I keep squirrels out %26amp; not harm birds(robins)
u can go to the store and look for some cool wooden birds houses that you can nail or use a strong ropes to hang the bird house and you can put osme leafs inside the bird house for the mother bird can start her new nesting and make it for her new home . you can try that instead to keep the wild birds and squirrels out . if the squirrels wont leave then you can put some walnuts on the ground near the tree for the squirrels to have .
Well..If you want them to, put bird feed and nuts or squirral feed out in your lawn. It works. Me and my mom did it and it REALLLLLY works!! We saved a baby squirral from being eaten by a hawk and we saved a nest from being harmed from squirreleyzz..

Do squirrels make a nest in the trees?

I want to know does the squirrels make their nest in tree for the new born babiesDo squirrels make a nest in the trees?
Yes. A squirrels nest can look much like a birds nest, but usually in a groin rather than on a branch.Do squirrels make a nest in the trees?
Yes its a dome shaped nest made of twigs and lined with leafs, it look similar to a magpies nest.
    Yes
    Yes
Don't they live in the tree rather then on the tree...
Yes they do. The nest that you see up in the tree is called a ';drey.'; They are typically made out of small twigs, leaves and other leaf-like materials. The interior of the nest is made soft by use of fur or other soft material and are usually located in the top third of a tree. Squirrels will also build a ';den'; inside the cavity of a tree. They usually use old woodpecker holes or other cavities that occur naturally in some trees over time.
Yes they do. It's a round affair with a sort of roof of sticks. It's called a dray.
Yes! We used to have a squirrel nest in one of our trees.
yes they can... A squirrels nest is made up of lots of dead leaves.. it will be big and round. they will also use a hollow tree.. or like when part of the tree is hollow.. they will make a nest in there... squirrels make several nests.. they have summer nests called dreys. and then they have their winter nests.. which are bigger and more secure. also when one nest gets flea infested.. they will move to another.. squirrels also nest in peoples attics or in barns or sheds. basically the safest place they can find.. they will nest there. ;)
more likely in your loft!!! cute little buggers!
they tend to find hole`s in tree`s to make nest`s but it`s not like a bird`s nest.
Yes, they do. And your in the wrong catagorie, you should be in Pets-General, not Birds.
They can make their nests in trees and often do. They will take any port in a storm that offers free rent. Squirrels are bad about making nests inside the attics of houses, if they can find a way up and in.

I have bunches and bunches of squirels around my house as I live against the woods. Unfortunately, one or more have taken up residence in the attic in the roof. They will damage the insulation and possibly chew the wiring causing a fire hazard.

In the U.S. There is about one or two spots which have albino squirrels, these are protected by law and kind of rare. There is also a black squirel.
yes squirrels do make nest in trees and there nest are very similar to bird nests the only way you can tell its a squirrels nest is by consistently viewing squirrels climing up the tree into the nest
Yes they do.We saw our first RED squirrel ever on the Isle of Wight just before Easter!Sooooooooooo cute!
    UR MOM!!%26lt;3333

Duhh u retard,,y do u think that squirrels go in trees?!?!

Baby squirrel out of nest. Should I rescue it?

The mom is up in the tree fixing her nest. She has another baby in its mouth. I am wondering if she kicked it out of the nest or if she took it out to fix it. I don't know a whole lot about wildlife. I am afraid to touch it because if the mom has plans of getting it off the ground I don't want her to neglect it because of me. The baby is lying there crying. Its heartbreaking. What should I do?Baby squirrel out of nest. Should I rescue it?
Watch from a long distance. If the baby is there for a long time, like after the mother is finished with the nest or when it starts to get dark, take the baby and keep it in a warm place until you can bring it to a wildlife rehabilitation centre, or read up on everything you can possibly find about squirrels, get any equipment you may need and do it yourself. (probably the route I would go for, as no one cares for animals much around here, and I don't trust them anyway, thats just me.)

This reminds me of those nature shows where a lion cub might be starving to death and they just watch it die because they don't want to ';interfere';. It makes me sick, because humans have already interefered with nature so much that lions and other animals are rare or inbred in some places, but if they just had the sense to take the cub to a wild park and raise it, they would be helping the future of the animal.

Anyway, a little off track there, but I wish you and the baby the greatest success.

Good luck!Baby squirrel out of nest. Should I rescue it?
try and save the baby squirrel
Don't touch it or it will die. FYI it is just a rat with a long tail.
Are you outside beside the tree? If you are, you are most likely preventing the mom from coming down to rescue the baby because she is afraid of you. I would monitor the baby for about 20-30 minutes through a window. If the mom does come down to get the baby, yay. If not, save it.

    Good luck.
    Yes try to save it.
    watch but don't touch!

    Where do squirrels nest?

In trees, nut trees, usually. They differ from birds nests in that they are HUGE, and are way up high in the tree, towards the ends of the limbs. Also, they aren't as well constructed as birds nests.Where do squirrels nest?
They nest in nut bearing trees ususally. But they are very adaptable and can nest anywhere they feel safe with access to a food source they are comfortable with.Where do squirrels nest?
Trees. In the fall after the leaves have dropped you can see their little nests up there.
    trees or

on top of Miako's head (its from an anime so...)

In large warrens they build in trees. The males leave to sleep in the branches when there are babies, but sleep in the warren in the winter.

Ohhh....Did I mention how good they taste when they have eaten pecans all of their life?

Do squirrels stay together in nests?

Depending on the type of squirrel, social behaviors vary. Red Squirrels are solitary creatures and prefer to live alone all year long, except when raising young. However, gray and flying squirrels are solitary during the summer, but will often stay together in large groups (of up to 24 squirrels) during the winter to keep warm.Do squirrels stay together in nests?

Squirrels + birds nest in my trees (conifers). To save them from harm when is the best time to cut back trees?

Are your conifers growing that fast and do they really need cutting back? For the birds, the best time to cut would be in the autumn. For the squirrels the best time to cut would be in the early spring - and for the trees, the best time to cut would be in the middle of spring or the middle of the autumn.

If you have a number of conifers it might be helpful to do one at a time. That way at least the creatures living in them can prepare to move next door! Please, never ever cut them in the late spring/early summer - that is when the babies are born/hatched - and they will die.Squirrels + birds nest in my trees (conifers). To save them from harm when is the best time to cut back trees?
late fallSquirrels + birds nest in my trees (conifers). To save them from harm when is the best time to cut back trees?
Frankly, I don't see the problem. What harm are the critters doing to your trees? By ';cutting them back'; I assume you mean pruning or shaping them, and I don't see how that would affect whether birds or squirrels inhabit them or not.

Anyway, conifers can be shaped any time except when they are actively putting on new growth (June, in Maine where I live).
    Preferably when their not home.
    in the Autumn.

after the babies have left the nests.
    Autumn before the frosts arrive
Conifers should be cut back in the autumn but can be trimmed all the year round.

It depends on the conifer. Some will not grow back and may die if cut back too hard, others will sprout again.
Late Autumn is the best time, but you might have a squirrels dray (home or nest) in your trees, but there won't be any young in it at that time of year, if you do disturb it, don't worry, they'll soon build another were it's nice and quiet !!!

Brown and black baby squirrels in same nest?

I have a hollow tree in my yard which a squirrel has built a nest. The mother is a large brown squirrel. However now the babies are sticking their heads out of the holes in the tree and running around the outside of the holes and I see that their are 3 blacks ones and 1 brown one. How can this be?Brown and black baby squirrels in same nest?
    mixed genes from both parents.

the father is most probably black as well, so his colour was more dominant in those particular baby squirrels than in the single brown one

the mother's brown coloured gene was more dominant in the single brown baby squirrel than in the black ones.

May I suggest the trusty old pellet rifle. But first check with the hunting laws of your state. In most state there is no bag limit, which means, as long as you have pellets and the sun hasn't set, keep on shooting.
You can sprinkle medicated baby powder around any area you don't want them in. This does work and won't kill them. They will leave and go someplace else..........
I think squirrels are wonderful little creatures. They can be a lot of fun. Let them be.

Haha that's kinda cute, yea smart squirrel that's a cozy bed. There is a squirrel taking stuffing from my chair and going into a hole under the sidewalk is she nesting ?
No. Rodents pull fur from their stomachs to nest. They may also pull in other things, but they avoid things that smell like other animals especially predators (AKA humans). There is a squirrel taking stuffing from my chair and going into a hole under the sidewalk is she nesting ?
    Yes
    yep its a ground squirrel

How can I get a nesting squirrel out of my weeping cherry tree?

We have a squirrel that likes to nest high up in the weeping cherry tree in our front yard. This happened last year and at first we didn't mind at all. We noticed lots and lots of small branches of the tree on the ground underneath it. This is because the wood of the weeping cherry is not good for a nest, the branches are not firm and the nest falls apart.

The reason we are concerned this year is because last year, due to the nest not being strong enough, we came out one morning to find a bunch of dead baby squirrels on the ground. Now this idiotic squirrel is going to make the same mistake again, and while I personally don't care, my wife and children are upset about it.How can I get a nesting squirrel out of my weeping cherry tree?
Try buying an animal repellent such as ';Liquid Fence'; - one that has a hose-end attachment on top, so you can use your hose to apply it. Then spray the tree periodically. How can I get a nesting squirrel out of my weeping cherry tree?
Well unless you can get up there and push his nest down there is nothing you can do.

Where do gray squirrels make their nests and what do they make them out of?

See a live web cam of a gray squirrel's nest: http://newyorkwild.org/squirrels/squirre…

    Some more info:

';Gray squirrels use three different types of nest. Summer Dreys and Winter Dreys are conspicuous constructions of leaves and twigs mounted high in treetops. Winter Dreys are made in layers. The outer layer consists of interwoven twigs while an inner layer is built up with softer materials consisting of bark, leaves, moss, fur, grass, and “found” materials. They are resistant to winter winds and provide protection where den sites may be in short supply. Summer Dreys are less elaborate and provide minimal protection from the elements. They are less likely to be used for litters. Tree dens in hollow trees are the preferred nest sites for raising young.';Where do gray squirrels make their nests and what do they make them out of?

Do you think wolves eat dry kibble? IT'S FINE!!My german pointer swallowed a whole baby squirrel that was blown out of its nest. When I tried to get it from
    Did she burp?
No, it will be healthy for your dog- obviously not healthy for the squirrel. Dogs are made to eat smaller animals, not the commercial stuff we feed them for convenience. (I feed commerical stuff, too, but when I have time they get real food.)

Lots of people feed their pets healthy, raw meat diets nowadays.
He should be fine. Teaching him to chew might be a good idea.
The best thing to do would be to call your local vet. They would give you the best answer. That is a bigger dog and it may not do anything but just to make sure call your dogs vet. Hope everything is fine.
no can i borrow her to get mine out of my yard and garage
I would think that if your doggie is up to date on her vaccinations that she would be fine. Dogs are carniverous, after all, but it's an excellent choice to take her to the vet anyway.
i think it's pretty serious... i think u should bring her to the vet. lol i'm feeling sry for the squirrel
Probably not..usually dogs will chew before they swallow things....so...unless it tries to climb trees guess you are all right...April Fools....
As long as your dog poops, then there is no blockage and should be ok. If your dog becomes lethargic, get to the vet!

I've had cats swallow birds and mice whole without chewing with no bad effects.
I shouldn't worry too much. Do You live in an area with a high level of toxicity? ie Lots of Factories etc.

If it is a plesant environment then don;t worry but just keep an eye on Your Dog, observe Him and His poo(when You pick it up) if nothing changes then don't worry. Good Luck.

Also, maybe think about some obedience lessons so that when You say Leave it!, He will and avoid this worry.
    no
    Only for the squirrel.
No wont affect anything It is natural for animals to eat one another But you may want to go to the vet just in case
It'll be fine as long as therre was no poisens in the Squirrel just pay a visit to the vet or call on the phone to make sure
I used to have a Newfoundland that always found baby rabbits and ate them like popcorn. She never got sick, I felt sorry for the bunnys.
meh... just a pile of stinky sh** after its all digested and ready to come out
The negative effect is that the squirrels parents lost their baby.

Other than that, I don't think it would be overly bad for your dog.

    You must live somewhere warm.

  • Do squirrels make nests?

I just answered a question about a girl wanting to knock down a squirrel's nest in her tree. How is it that I've lived 37 years and never knew squirrels made nests? I thought they lived in holes in trees or empty logs and such. Do they really build nests llike a bird??Do squirrels make nests?
Yes, they do. WIth the remains of a sleeping bag in the crotch of a tree in my brother's front yard, no less.Do squirrels make nests?
Yes, they are rodents, mice make nest as well, for the young.
They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married.
Yeah, I gave you a thumbs down for making such an ignorant comment. SQUIRRELS MAKE NESTS. they look like a big ball of sticks in a tree, really high up. Easiest to see them in winter.
In the third verse of Annie's Song, John Denver sings about squirrels in nests.

    Yes, they do indeed!

    .
yes they do,but they also make those nests in holes in trees
Yes they do and they are really big at times
not as organized as birds but they do make nest. It looks like a mice nest. It is a ball of stuff they collect.
Squirrels do make nests in trees with twigs and leaves. usually the nest it up high and at a fork in branches. They also will use natural holes and things up in the trees. they will also make a nest in your attic insulation if they can get in under your roof. Squirrels are rodents and most rodents make some sort of nest.
Yes they build nests most conspicuously of leaves. Don't feel bad asking questions is how we learn. Those that think they have the answers are to be pitied.

    T4
Yes, they do make nests. It's not as nice as a bird's nest, but it's similar.

See? You're never too old to learn something new.
    yes
They do both actually, living in nests and hollows of logs/trees.

Look up in the trees in the winter and you'll probably see several squirrel nests.
It may not be as well designed and engineered as well as a bird's. I think it just bed lining and cushion as opposed to lying on the cold, solid wood.
probably they have kids too you kno!
    Both

They can live in holes in rotted out trees

and they will buld large nest for spanish moss and twigs.
    They do in-fact have nests

sometimes you can see them up high in trees, you problem have seen them but think they are birds nests as they do look exactly the same.
yes they do, they can make nests in trees too but most of the time thats where they keep nuts, on top of burying them in the ground. they also bark not quite like a dog but it is definatly a bark
    YES
yes. my friend rehabilitated baby squirrels.
No, they may take shelter in an abandoned nest, but they do not build them.
    YEA THEY DO
yes the do. they make nests or (nesting points) in holes in the bark of a tree. They store food there and insulate with branches leaves etc.
Answer is yes. I have 3 Maples in my front yard. All 3 have nests, and Ive seen the young squirrels

What is a squirrel,s nest called?

The grey squirrel builds itself a nest, or drey, about the size of a football, made of twigs, often with the leaves still attached. It is built fairly high in a tree and lined with dry grass, shredded bark, moss and feathers. A summer drey is usually quite flimsy and lodged among small branches. Sometimes the squirrel may make its nest in a hollow trunk or take over a rook's nest, constructing a roof for it. A squirrel may build several dreys. What is a squirrel,s nest called?

You will have to set one or more traps and haul the rats with bushy tails away to a nearby park or someone on the other side of town you dislike, and release them so they can't find their way back.
Try Mothballs the keep mice out it myth Work with Squirrels
You better get at it. Winter is coming and they are looking for suitable lodgings. Board up the entrance if you can find it. Otherwise they will breed in your attic and then they are like homing pidgeons. They will stay. They are tree rats.
Are there any openings? I have been told if you put mothballs inside (just toss them in whole) the smell is supposed to drive them away.
get to the grain and feed store, get ya some fox piss, put some on a towel and dab the towel around works like a charm.

Since foxes are natural predators to squirrels they will stay away from the urine.
Rat traps. Either that or wait for them outside and shoot them.

How can I get rid of a squirrel nest without killing them?

I went out onto my terrace for an early morning cigarette when I noticed a black bag filled with old sheets we have sitting out on our terrace was shaking. I investigated quietly (peeking through the opening) and noticed a squirrel living in the bag. I couldn't tell if there were any babies, being an animal lover if there are babies I don't want their mother to abandon them because I disrupted their nest. Our terrace is screened in, but there are a few holes in the screening that I knew about (so putting the bag out there was bad judgment on my part). I have a cat that sometimes sneaks out there and I just want to get rid of the squirrel for the safety of both it and my cat. Anyone have any ideas? Please don't suggest killing it, I don't want to hurt the little critter. How can I get rid of a squirrel nest without killing them?
I read somewhere that they do not like the smell of mothballs, but your cat might not, either ;0)

If you are worried about the health of your cat, I wouldn't. Squirrels are incredibly unlikely carriers of rabies, despite popular belief. I think people think that they carry rabies due to their incredibly nervous and aggressive behavior. Rodents, in general, are less likely to carry rabies than foxes, weasels and raccoons.

Now that the squirrel has a positive association with your porch, you may have to fix the screen to keep it out. Though, they have been known to chew through screens themselves. Good luck! How can I get rid of a squirrel nest without killing them?

  • If you move a baby flying squirrel's nest will the mother abandon them?

found a flying squirrel's nest in deer stand %26amp; need to move it help!!If you move a baby flying squirrel's nest will the mother abandon them?
Baby Squirrels are generally born 2 times a year, April/May and Aug/Sept, babies leave the nest between 12-14 weeks of age. It may not be wise to move the nest because the mother may abandon them due to stress (not necessarily the smell, babies have been reintroduced after human handling without problem) If the babies are molting they are likely nearing adolescence, at which time they usually leave the nest anyway, so I guess it's your call.If you move a baby flying squirrel's nest will the mother abandon them?
Yes, there will be a human smell to the nest that you move and the mother will leave the nest and babies behind.

Mothers of baby animals are very in tune to what or who may have touched the nesting place of their young. If in any way they suspect something out of the ordinary they will indeed abandon the nest. I take care of abandoned and wildlife left behind.
yea the mom will abanded the babys

Making some sort of squirrel nest?

scince september last year, we have finaly had squirrels come to our balcony, it was a big supprise because it was the first time in 12 years scince we were living there and they were the rare red ones to ^^.

anyway me and my mum were thinking that we should make them some sort of nest so we can have them living on our balcony.

all i ask is..... how? lol

my mum thaught of having a large cardboard box with a medium sized whole, and inside to have some sawdust or a warm blanket with a food boal? i dunno, thats why im asking the questions.

if you could be so kind can u put some links and stuff ^^Making some sort of squirrel nest?
I think you will be very lucky to get them to nest on your balcony. Normal drays, the squirrels nest, is high up in a fork of a tree and sometimes inside a hollow bough. If you can get a hollow log fixed securely under the roof of your balcony you might get them interested.Making some sort of squirrel nest?
a wood box would be better card board is not very sturdy. and if you leave some scraps of cloth wood stuffing leaves all sorts of sutff they will use it all and leave food there they may come. but really squirrels use the smae nest most of there lives but you can try.
I wouldn't suggest cardboard only because when it rains the cardboard would fall apart. My dad built a ';squirrel house'; it looks just like a giant birdhouse but with a bigger hole. He put a couple nails on the side to hold corn for the squirrels. I'm not sure if the squirrels are sleeping in there, but last time dad was out there the ';squirrel house'; had twigs and leaves in it.

I would put the food bowls on the outside somewhere. So that way if a squirrel does move into the ';squirrel house'; you don't disturb them by sticking your hands in there. You could get bitten.

I have been finding holes all over my front and back yard from them. I noticed a huge nest up high in one of my maple trees. I have no idea how to get it down. Anything I can put out to get rid of them? I mostly just want the nest down. What if I throw rocks up there lol will that knock it down. And, I'm afraid of what is in there....Are there actually squirrels in there always?Big squirrel nest in tree what to do?
You should be ashamed of yourself, trying to ruin the only home the poor guy has. You try living outside ALL winter!Big squirrel nest in tree what to do?
take a long bamboo and take it down
put it in a pot with some onions
Why would you do that...its nature at its best!! I am pretty sure its against the law now adays to disturb a babies nest. Good luck with that one!
Just leave the nest there, what's it doing to you?!? They are cute animals. I like watching them play with each other. If I were you, I wouldn't throw anything at it. Don't be mean. Good Luck!
squirrels don't make nests silly. Don't knock it down, that's some animal's home. You are in it's habitat when you are outside. Now if it was on your home that would be a different story, but in a tree? Leave the poor thing alone you meanie.
Call an exterminator. Or shoot them down yourself.
if there is get a 4-10, get some ammo, aim and FIRE!
Why don't you just cut down the tree? While you're at it cut down all your trees. That will show those bad squirrels a thing or two.

Maybe you could just pave your entire yard then you wouldn't have to worry about those pesky squirrels that live in your neighbors' trees digging up your precious yard.

Or you could let the little guys live.

    Do you work for ExxonMobil?
Personally, I am a nature lover. I have a squirrel feeder. They actually come running when I call them for dinner. Can't understand why you would want to tear down their nest, especially with winter coming. Live and let live!!!
Buy/borrow/steal a ferret that`ll get rid of anything live in there and you don`t have to see the carnage!
There are pest control firms that specialize in live trapping %26amp; relocation. I had racoons in my basement %26amp; that's what I did. When they have been relocated, someone will have to climb the tree %26amp; remove the nest. Squirrels have young in the spring so they will be in the nest then. Late summer is the best time to relocate them. Chances are that they or others will be back, in that case, feed them.
    Squirrel phobia??

Squirrels do make nests, contrary to what one uninformed person answered. And yes, there will be squirrels inside that nest but they will be hibernating for most of the winter. Squirrels avoid people: they're not going to come out and getcha.

Squirrels are digging in your yard because they are burying food to eat later. They'll dig up your yard again in early spring as they try to find the nuts they buried this fall. I'm going out on a limb here by guessing that the tree they're nesting in is an oak tree. And squirrels love to eat acorns. As long as you have an oak tree in your yard (or in your neighbors' yard) there will be squirrels around.

You're lucky they are nesting in a tree. If they decided to nest in your attic then you'd really have a problem. The little holes they dig are just a minor nuisance. It's not worth getting your undies in a bundle over it.
Depending on where you live, there are laws prohibiting you from poising them. Most likely there are not babies in the nest this time of year. If you really feel like you have to get rid of them, What you want to do is get a Hav-a-Hart trap (which you can buy at home depot or lowes). When you get the trap , bait them with peanut butter, Then when you catch the squirrels take them to some woods approximately 15-20 miles away from your home or they will just return and rebuild their nest. Just removing the nest isn't enough. Once the squirrels are relocated you can either leave it there mostly squirrel nests are just leaves or have someone climb up and remove it. Sorry, but rocks won't work and most likely the holes in your yard probably aren't from the squirrels but from chipmunks moles or some other burrowing animal
We have two squirrel's nests in our backyard, way up on top of Cherry tree. It's like a huge bird nest. I'm not sure why they make nest on top of the tree! How do they stay dry and warm from all kinds of weather? I can't imagine...(Are they plain stupid??) Anyway, we just leave them be. Every season, a few of squirrels try to make home, but they just leave soon after. Not sure why. One morning, I found a dead, skinned, decapitated and eaten squirrel's body(Yuck!) on the ground. I think a raccoon did it. I actually felt sorry for the little guy because I saw this guy carrying mouthful of cotton or a piece of wall insulation material found somewhere up to his nest day after day. It was kind of cute. Unfortunate for the squirrels, but sometimes, 'circle of life' would take care of it.
squirrel nests usually come with squirrels. you can set traps out to catch them alive--the local animal shelter may loan you some. or get a shotgun and clean house with it.

How to rid your yard of squirrels:

    http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/Professio鈥?/a>
While I do understand the nuisance of having them tearing up your yard and then having to turn around and fix it again, take a moment and think of it this way...Just how bad is having to fix a few holes in the yard when you can still enjoy nature at its greatest points right now. The way this world is going you never know when they might go away and never come back. Take a few moments each day to throw some food out there for them and just sit and watch I guarantee you will relax about it and really start to enjoy doing it every day. Also the holes could be from something else as honestly I have never in my personal life seen them digging ';not saying they wont'; just that i never have seen it myself. I guess what I am saying is don't let something like this stress you there are way too many other things to do that.
Awww...please leave it alone. It needs a home just as you do!!How would you like it if someone threw rocks; knocked your house to the ground!!!
