What is the best way to rid of squirrels nesting in the attic; how also to prevent new ones in the future?

Squirrels have easily adapted to humans. They frequently use buildings as nesting areas. Squirrels love to stay in an attic or soffit. They often find a small opening and will chew a wider hole to gain access to the building. They bring nesting material into the home, and make quite a bit of noise scurrying around and caching nuts. They often fall down the chimney flu and make a lot of noise or enter the fireplace. Sometimes they fall down a wall from the attic and get stuck. They often chew their way into commercial buildings or apartments. They often enter the attic through the gable vent. Squirrels can cause a fire hazard in homes by bringing in nesting material, and by chewing on power lines. Squirrels can leave behind a lot of droppings and urine in the attic. The droppings not only smell bad, but they pose a biohazardous risk, and the smell attracts new squirrels. I highly recommend attic decontamination services if you've had squirrels living in your attic.

Wondering how to get rid of squirrels? There is no magic spray or device that you can use to make them go away. Some people try to sell predator urine, such as coyote or fox urine to get rid of squirrels, but that doesn't work. They also try to sell ultrasonic sound emitters. These devices are worthless at eliminating squirrels. Some old wive's tales recommend the use of mothballs or ammonia-soaked rags to make them leave, but I've been to countless homes where these techniques failed - biologists know that these attempts won't work. The ONE AND ONLY WAY to take care of your problem is with trapping and removal of the animals. First you have to find out where they are getting in at. You have to make sure they are all out before you can seal their entry off. You can set a humane trap and try to catch them. What we did was we found out how they were getting in and where. My husband took large plastic detergent containers and made like a little slide, they could slide out but not get back in, when they were all out we then sealed the area off. No problems since. If you try this make sure you keep checking to make sure they don't try to chew their way through the plastic, we caught them chewing at it, which would have allowed them to get back in. You will definately want to use a trap to catch the squirrel alive, you don't want a dead squirrel up there. Your local humane society can usually loan you a live trap. Then you will need to do a thorough walk around of your house to find out how he got in. Sometimes it is as easy a repairing a loose vent screen.
Get a cat. The presence of a predator will discourage squirrels.
the humane way is to use the metal traps made which will catch the squirrel without harming it and to prevent them coming in you have to find the entry hole and repair or fill it if you have wood siding or shingles it could happen again but hopefully not

also be sure to release the trapped squirrel far away from your neighborhood

I believe you can also buy some kind of squirrel repellent
Get a Silky Terrier!

They are GREAT pets, very entertaining, and no varmint would dare step paw anywhere near your home or yard...

WARNING: If a Silky sees one through the fence, it's likely to get over a 6 ft fence to go after it.... no chain link or wood... must be solid 6 ft vinyl. There are no cross links or chains it can climb and it can't see through it.

Good luck!
put a ';no squatting'; sign on your attic.....

seriously... look for their means of entry... then close it....

thats way you can prevent them from coming inside...
u must set traps every night /day , many might get caught , this would stop them , but it might take a continous three months.
you can put some rat posion and get rid of them that way and then cheek for holes and fix them.
