And does anyone know how to tell if their are baby squirrels in a nest. We are about to do some severe tree cutting and i don't want to cut a tree that has babies in it.Do Squirrels reuse their nest?
.Yes, squirrels do re-use nests. The only effective way is to look into the nest. If you have the time, observe (with binoculars) if there is 'traffic' to and from the nest.
You don't say where you are, if you're in Fl., there are already babies in nests here. If you're up north, taking down trees/limbs will evict the occupant into cold weather and it likely will not survive.
Before you cut anything, locate a good rehabber and keep that # handy, in fact, a heads up call would be greatly appreciated. Call around to a few vet's offices and ask about rehabbers in your area. If there are young in the nest, time is critical.
Young squirrels and birds cannot thermal regulate and must be kept warm.Do Squirrels reuse their nest?
A rule of thumb is “nests with fewer leaves tend to be birds, more leaves squirrels.” Large leaf-lined nests high up in trees are those of gray and red squirrels. Other large nests could have been made by red-tailed hawks or crows. squirrels also nest in tree cavities.
Many birds reuse nests, so admire the nests you see — do not remove or collect them. (In fact, one must have a federal permit to collect nests.) Still other birds may build two or three nests a year. To encourage nesting, try leaving some dead trees standing, hang out a bird house, and keep your barn doors open.
Yes they do reuse their nests. Just check the nest before you cut the branch to see if a squirrel has started a new family yet.
i dont think so (i know that birds dont)..........but dont count on it. i dont know how to tell if baby suirrels are in a nest.
I dont know if all squirrels do this, but in one of our big trees we have a huge nest and every year for the past 12yrs. there are a family of squirrels in it.
