Cat squirrels are commonly referred to as grey squirrels. Therotically it is possible for a cat squirrel to take over the nest of a fox squirrel. However, these two species tend to like different areas to live in.

Gray squirrels are primarily forest dwellers, preferring mature hardwoods with bushy undergrowth and nearby streams and lakes. They frequently inhabit wooded parks and residential neighborhoods in small woodlots. Fox squirrels are most often found in open agricultural areas with oak and hickory woodlots, often traveling along fencerows, and hardly ever in city parks.

It is possible that simply because of the competition for food that the fox squirrels opted to move to a more suitable location.
