Try putting ';chicken wire'; or something similar over the opening. This will allow ventilation but prevent birds, squirrels etc from getting in. Get a fairly realistic-looking plastic owl. Owls are deadly predators and rodents like squirrels have a built-in mortal fear of them and won;t go near anything that looks like them.
I use Hot pepper to keep Raccoons away from my trash
There's a thing called a 'sonic repellant' device. These are supposedly very effective against squirrels. A friend of mine used one of them and they solved his problem.

Try hanging some Moth Balls around in sacks and see if this helps
