Will a squirrel make a nest in your home if you feed it?

There is a very large tree outside my house, which is a home to three squirrels. They were getting into my garbage so, I decided to feed them shelled peanuts( I place them at the base of the tree once a day.)

My 4 year old is entertained by this and loves to watch them eat. My husband says they may nest in our home. Will a squirrel make a nest in your home if you feed it?
If they are happy with their drey (squirrel nest) being where it is, and have no need to move house, then they won't. Perhaps when the squirrels have young (kits), the young may move into your house if you continue to feed them. Will a squirrel make a nest in your home if you feed it?
Sounds like they're happy in their tree and with those peanuts!

Squirrels are often wonderful entertainment, though sometimes they can become a hassle if they find their way into your house.

Do a once-over in and around your house. Make sure there are no open holes or cracks, or soft, delicious, plastic screens ready to chew through to a crawlspace or an attic.

Squirrels will nest in a nesting box if you put one out for them.

These can be purchased at a local back yard bird feeding store. Wild Birds Unlimited is a national franchise and you might have one in your state, hopefully close to you. But no city is without a nature and bird feeding store. Google a back yard bird feeding store in whatever city you live in and I'm sure something will come up.

If you're handy with wood, you could even build the house yourself.

If you don't want to put any money toward it, just leave them to the tree they seem to be doing just fine in.

Squirrels will also appreciate nesting material. This can include clean cotton swabs, shreds or small pieces of material, loose hair from a hairbrush, human or animal, and laundry lint. **Just as long as NO fabric softener, or fabric towels are used in the wash** That stuff is extremely toxic to wildlife.

But no, they won't automatically nest in your home since you've started feeding them.

Unless their natural nest is destroyed for some reason, they won't seek emergency shelter. And since summer has just begun, they probably don't need to worry about being flooded.

Have fun and enjoy the squirrels!

(and just for my peace of mind, make sure the peanuts are always unsalted, either roasted or raw. They love them in-the-shell as well, which are often cheaper in bulk vs. shelled.) : )
If they can get in your house they will nest there. Its warm and safe and secure, and near a food source.
