While a slingshot will give you the gratification of shooting a projectile and watching it destroy the tree-rat's creation, it is only a temporary solution. However, this may not be a bad thing, you could gain skill and enjoy yourself for many months or years to come with the slingshot method.
Mustard gas might get you arrested, so I think you should avoid it.
Seriously, squirrels will survive anything. When one dies, another moves in to replace it. They say that cockroaches will be the lone survivors of a nuclear holocaust, but I disagree, squirrels will out last everything.
Burn the tree, go up and get it down yourself, capture the squirrel in a ';have a heart trap';, depending on how high up it is you can poke it with a stick, or just throw rocks or use the sling shot. or you can put poison around it and they'll go for that if it's with bird seed. But you have a better chance with the slingshot that trying to get a gas bomb up there.
If your trees produce nuts or some kind of seeds you will always have a squirrel or two up there. You might want to have the nest removed and taken over to the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. There are more nuts there and more varieties too!

why would you want to get rid of squirrels, they're the cutest vermon i have ever seen. and chipmunks too, can i have the tree? my garden needs some life....
